Wow. I stumbled across this video on a a friend's Facebook page. This kid is incredible. When I think about the times that I've been at a protest and wondered if I would be able to eloquently, quickly, and easily explain my position or how I feel about the situation on the spot, I always get nervous. There is not hesitation in this kid's on point analysis. Where does this come from? Is this something that we can think about in the realm of education? Is this something that can be taught? Or is this just one very, very special kid?
I love when he says "I listen to people a lot and use my own brain". I think this a wonderful way to think about our own education, and how a big part of it is listening. But not listening and taking things in blindly,as in the Banking system of education, rather having students think through things on their own. In education I think it is really important to give students confidence in their own mind and capabilities.
ReplyDeletei think lots of kids are very clear on the facts and their experience of larger world issues. they don't have the clutter that adults do in their minds.
ReplyDeletethe best part in my mind though is that his perspective has gone viral. it's out there and spread so quickly, whereas ten or fifteen years ago we might never have seen this. the first person narrative can be shared so much further and more quickly.
Children are fearless, they have not yet learned to self censor, to doubt one's own eyes, ears and feelings, they are free to learn and then to express themselves in ways that we have lost. Maybe they can teach us to find our courage again. Thanks for this blog and post!
